“The Night Before Christmas” is the fifth from the 15 operas by Rimsky-Korsakov. Based on Gogol's narrative the 1890s, it bears all the features of the “grand imperial opera” with extensive folklore scenes, ensembles, and ballet divertissements. The amazing world of Gogol, where fantasy is intertwined with everyday life, and humor coexists with a bright outlook on life, is captivating. National folklore flavor reigns here, funny and mystical events happening on the Christmas Eve. And although among the characters in the opera there is a witch, a sorcerer, and a devil, they are all just heroes of a fairy tale and cause not fear, but a smile.
